Sallente-Gento Lake power plant
Located in La Torre de Cabdella (Pallars Jussà, Lleida), the Sallente-Gento Lake pumped storage hydropower plant was commissioned in 1985 and has an installed capacity of 440 MW.
The plant’s facilities are housed inside an artificial cave, and a cable car was built to facilitate access to the lake for the plant’s construction.
This reversible plant, developed by Ecyr and currently owned by Endesa Generación, pumps water for energy generation between Gento Lake – a natural reservoir – and Sallente, built for storing water after generating energy.
It is Endesa’s power plant with the highest installed capacity, and it can provide 468MW for 8 hours straight and supply power to 100.000 homes.
It is also the largest pumped storage plant in Catalonia with a total stored energy of 3.2 GWh, which is in the order of the largest BESS systems in the world.
